The finals, and where they were played
European finals were almost never played here: the stadium is home to the first and second legs, the final is played at a neutral venue. From the crossroads you reach the cup nights, not the cups.

Forty-eight European finals, and almost none in this stadium: the final is played where UEFA assigns it. The rounds are played here, which is why the photo collection has the packed stadium and not the trophies.
First-round exits are in the archive just like the wins: one hundred and twenty-four European seasons, including those that ended at once. A first-round elimination is a fact just like a final won.
Images of the cups that remain under the rights of UEFA and the agencies are catalogued with their address and not copied: the page shows photographs of the stadium, the part of this story that is here.

San Siro, final venue
Four European Cup finals at the stadium
UEFA chose San Siro for four finals of the European Cup, later the Champions League: 1965, 1970, 2001 and 2016. Only the first had a Milan team on the pitch, Inter, against Benfica. The other three, and the four UEFA Cup finals played here, are told in A hundred years.
- 27 May 1965 Inter 1–0 Benfica Goal by Jair. Inter win their second European Cup in a row, in their own stadium. Images of the final, on the UEFA website ↗
- 6 May 1970 Feyenoord 2–1 Celtic After extra time, goal by Kindvall. It is the first European Cup won by a Dutch team. Images of the final, on the UEFA website ↗
- 23 May 2001 Bayern 1–1 Valencia Bayern win on penalties, 5–4. Both goals of the match come from penalties. Images of the final, on the UEFA website ↗
- 28 May 2016 Real Madrid 1–1 Atlético Real win on penalties, 5–3: it is their eleventh title. Two teams from the same city. Images of the final, on the UEFA website ↗

What this page rests on
Every fact is checked against at least two independent sources and, where one exists, the official source.
Two independent sources
Dates, measurements and names go through at least two sources that do not copy each other. Where it exists, we go to the original: the deed, the archive, the body that owns it. What appears in only one place waits.
One version only
If two sources disagree, the original document prevails. If even that is not enough, only the part they agree on is written: the year, for example, instead of the day.
Updated every day
The press review and calendar are updated every day. Everything else changes when a new document turns up, and then it changes everywhere at once.
From the community
Many memories, family photographs and tips come from people who live here, writing to the Facebook page. They are published only if the sender agrees. How to take part: Community.
Everything traceable
Sources are listed above and on the page Sources, with archive, shelfmark and terms of use.
No interpretation passed off as fact
An approximate figure stays approximate, a project stays a project until construction starts, and whatever does not add up stays out. The criteria are in Method.
